Technology combinations for the new BMW X3

Design foils, PU flooding and a special sealing concept

Modern interior design in the automotive sector offers more than just a little comfort nowadays. Rather, the new BMW X3 features exclusive highlights with Ambient Light.

We are pleased that nine of our injection molding tools made it possible to create this unique atmosphere with a dynamic light composition in the new BMW SUV.

To achieve this, PVD-coated design foils were placed in the injection moulds and overmoulded with PC. To prevent light from scattering in unwanted directions, PC/ABS strips were then injected to redirect the light.

Finally, the components were flooded with polyurethane, without losing the design effects of the foil.

In fact, the PU flooding results in a self-healing, scratch-resistant coating, which does not require painting. Subsequent scrap-prone paint jobs are unnecessary.

Thanks to the efficien design and implementation of all steps within a singel mould, there is no need for any subsequent assembly. This results in beautiful visual elements and time-efficien production with low logistics costs.

When installed in the BMW X3, the final parts provide impressive lighting and design features. Just as the inventor intended – for the perfect ambience for every journey.
