Science Based Targets initiative confirms climate targets

Averting climate change requires ambitious measures – including tool making and mechanical engineering. We therefore support the goal of limiting global warming to 1.5°C and want to do our part.

Many measures that have already been implemented or are being planned, such as the usage of 100% green electricity, the expansion of photovoltaic systems and the gradual conversion to an electric vehicle fleet, aim to comply with the Paris Climate Agreement from 2015. This has now also been confirmed by the Science Based Targets initiative:

Both our short-term reduction targets by 2030 and our long-term targets by 2050 for greenhouse gas emissions are in line with the global climate agreement. In concrete terms, this means that we are planning to reduce Scope 1 and Scope 2 emissions by at least 42% by 2030 and including Scope 3 by at least 90% by 2050, starting from the base year 2022.

Our integrated management system in accordance with DIN EN ISO 9001, 14001 and 50001 has ensured a high standard of operational environmental protection for many years, which we are further expanding by setting our emission reduction targets.

What is the Science Based Targets initiative?

The Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) is a global board that empowers businesses and financial institutions worldwide to play their part in tackling the climate crisis. The SBTi develops standards, tools and guidance to keep global warming below catastrophic levels and achieve net-zero emissions by 2050 at the latest. Over 7,500 companies worldwide are already working with the SBTi and almost 3,000 of them have committed to the net zero target.

The initiative is a collaboration between the CDP (Carbon Disclosure Project), the United Nations Global Compact, the World Resources Institute (WRI) and the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF), and is one of the commitments of the We Mean Business Coalition. The SBTi defines and promotes best practice in defining science-based targets, provides helpful resources for implementation and assesses and approves companies’ targets as an independent organization.

Günter Hofmann receives Tool and Mould Making Medal of Honour

Our long-standing Managing Director Günter Hofmann was awarded the “Werkzeug & Formenbau Ehrenmedaille” (Tool & Mould Making Medal of Honour) at Moulding Expo 2023.

His decades of commitment to the industry, the continuous filling of honorary positions and the promotion of young talent convinced the independent jury. Not to forget, of course: The strong leadership of our company over several decades.

The medal is awarded by an independent jury consisting of respected personalities from the VDMA, the VDWF – Verband Deutscher Werkzeug- und Formenbauer e.V. (Association of German Tool and Mould Makers) and the WBA Aachener Werkzeugbau Akademie GmbH. With this award, the jury recognises special merits and outstanding contributions to the development of tool and mould making.

The award does not aim to honour a completed life’s work of the honoured, but rather to serve as an incentive to continue to exert a positive influence on the industry and, in particular, to serve as a role model and guide for younger generations.

Günter Hofmann took over the family business Siegfried Hofmann GmbH from his father Siegfried Hofmann in 1995. More than two decades later, he handed over the company management to his son Stefan Hofmann in 2018.

During his time as managing director, the company trained over 500 apprentices, opened a new training centre, several new buildings e.g. for the mechanical engineering sector, and a completely new factory plant in Lichtenfels. He also promoted the development of the company as an international, high-tech player in toolmaking as well as the rapid growth of the mechanical engineering division.

Unique research and innovation: Patents from Siegfried Hofmann GmbH

Striving for ever better solutions to meet our customers’ requirements is an integral part of our corporate philosophy. The goal: to always provide you with optimal products, technologies and services that are unsurpassable in terms of quality.

To make this possible, every year we invest manpower, time and equity in researching new techniques and processes from which you, our customers, can benefit. May it be new manufacturing processes for plastic and particle foam parts, new mold technologies, or new impulses for temperature control equipment – our efforts to make good things even better extend from mold making to mechanical engineering.

For your success: Our patents

This ambition pays off: Since 2019 alone, over 26 new patents from “Hofmann – Ihr Impulsgeber” have come into force. As a result, our customers regularly benefit from novel as well as unique technologies from us. Meaning we can even better fulfill their product requirements or implement previously unrealizable demands.

By applying research results, our customers can additionally optimize the quality of their products. Thanks to our patents, they can integrate features and consumer benefits into their products that were previously impossible to implement. This enables special competitive advantages, as the needs of end customers can be met in unique ways – and in ways that no other competitor can.

The latest technology usually goes hand in hand with solutions that are in higher quality, more effective, more efficient and longer lasting. Therefore, due to our patents, you can also save long-term costs in production. These cost savings can in turn be passed on by our customers to the end user.

All patents of “Hofmann – Ihr Impulsgeber” can be viewed at any time on the website of the German Patent and Trademark Office.

One machine, many patents: BEAD.MACHINE

Our particle molding machine BEAD.MACHINE combines numerous innovative solutions and impressively demonstrates why patents can give you a competitive edge:

For example, thanks to technology protected by “Hofmann – Ihr Impulsgeber” publication number DE 10 2017 118 960 B4, the BEAD.MACHINE implements even the most filigree details and structures with particle foam: Tiny intricacies and patterns are easily realized thanks to additively manufactured tools. This enables detailed particle foam surfaces in just one manufacturing step – making additional and time-consuming surface treatment such as lasering unnecessary.

Further patents regarding the processing of the particle foam and the filling of an associated mold make the BEAD.MACHINE a particularly resource-saving and economical molding machine, which at the same time shines with unique precision.

FunciFoam: Steamless particle foam technology for new areas of application.

Research is an important pillar for Hofmann – Ihr Impulsgeber in order to always be able to offer its customers and partners the most innovative and best technologies. This has already been proven, among other things, by the award „Innovativ durch Forschung“ from the Stifterverband.

We are therefore all the more pleased to have successfully completed the “FunciFoam” research project with our research partners, which was funded by the German Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy:

Within the project, the variothermal processing for efficient as well as steamless particle foam welding was analyzed. The process was investigated for established (EPS, EPE and EPP) as well as new technical particle foams, which are difficult to foam by conventional steam welding. The aim was to develop an energy-efficient process using a newly developed variothermal tool that can be used to integrate in-situ functional elements such as metal inserts or electronic elements e.g. LED lightings modules.

Together with the project partners PARAT, FOX Velution, the UVEX Safety Group and Neuen Materialien Bayreuth as well as the supporting partners AUDI and RYGOL Dämmstoffe, the research project was successfully completed by realizing a functional demonstrator in the form of a tool case with in-situ foaming-in of metal inserts and an LED module.

FunciFoam Werkzeugkoffer Forschungsprojekt

The final case made of mPPE particle foam not only convinces with a weight saving of more than 30 % compared to a previous reference product, but also offers new application possibilities due to the foamed-in elements compared to regular steam-based products.
